Your Exam - Bone Density Exam

Bone scans measure the amount of bone in a particular site of the body, usually the lower part of the spine, the hip, the forearm or the heel.  They are sometimes referred to as DEXA scans because of the technique used to obtain your bone mineral density.  Doctors use the scans to help them to assess the likelihood of future bone fractures and whether any treatment is needed.  DRC offers this service at both the Atrium and Battlefield imaging locations.

Before the exam

No preparation is necessary.

During the exam

You will need to lie still for a few minutes.  No needles are involved.  The X-ray dose used for the test is very small, a fraction of that needed for a chest X-ray.  The scan generally takes about 10 to 20 minutes to complete.

After the exam

You may resume your normal daily routine after your exam.
