Various imaging modalities are focused on identifying anatomic, pathologic, and functional abnormalities within the abdominal cavity.  Fluoroscopy/barium studies can be performed for evaluation of the entire alimentary tract for signs of inflammation, ulcers, or masses and to assess for gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) or gastrointestinal motility abnormalities. Swallowing function studies can assess patients at risk for aspiration and nuclear medicine studies can assess functional problems such as delayed gastric emptying (gastroparesis), or problems with the liver, gallbladder, spleen, and kidneys.  Ultrasound is excellent for gallstone detection and is a good screening tool for most of the organs within the abdomen, as well as evaluation of the uterus and ovaries in the female pelvis.  CT scans have become the workhorse of abdominal imaging, particularly in patients with cancer or unexplained pain.  All CT scans are not the same.  At DRC, specific CT scanning protocols are used to address specific complaints or disease processes.  This assures greater accuracy.  Additionally, DRC only operates multi-detector helical scanners which provide superior image quality, allowing extraordinary three-dimensional images to resolve complex problems.  MRI is excellent for many applications within the abdomen and pelvis sometimes preventing the need for a more invasive study such as angiography or ERCP. Depending on the organ or disease process of concern, an MRI exam can also be protocolled to solve specific diagnostic dilemmas.
